Stuart Davis

In 1913 Davis was one of the youngest painters to exhibit in the now-famous Armory Show in Chicago. The five works he displayed were heavily influenced by the teaching of New York's Robert Henri under whom Stuart studied. At the Armory Show, Davis was exposed to the works of Van Gogh, Matisse, and Picasso and at once became committed to modernism in America. Well into the 1940s and 1950s, his paintings became bold and colorful.

It should be noted that Stuart was a well-rounded artist, and in the 1920s he painted abstract still lifes and landscapes. He then visited Paris where street scenes became a favorite subject. And not to be forgotten is his use of contemporary subject matter such as gas pumps, cigarette packages, and spark plugs which introduced pop art to his body of work.
