Collins Cover Announcement

Modern Art in America

A "Subscriber-Only" Limited Edition

Marsden Hartleg

This cover is a continuation of my Modem Art set done exclusively for my subscribers. As such, they are sure to become very desirable cachets that only rarely will be available on the open market.

Hartley was born on January 4, 1877 in Lewiston, Maine. He began his training at the Cleveland School of Art in 1892. Then, at age 22, Marsden moved to New York City to study painting at the New York School of Art. In 1908 he relocated to a farm near Lowell, Maine, where he considered his paintings done there as his first major works.

In April of 1912, he traveled to Europe for the first time and was encouraged to continue his painting by Gertrude Stein's group of avant-garde artists in Paris. He returned to Maine for the last time in 1937 where he declared that he wanted to depict American life at a local level.

My cachet illustrates part of a painting by Hartley that portrays the lives and art of Native Americans. It is an absolutely beautiful hand painted cachet that I've produced just for my subscribers. Marsden Hartley is now ready. Collins #U5104 at $12.50.
