Modern Art in America

A 'Subscriber—Only" Limited Edition

Aaron Douglas

In the 1920s, American artist Aaron Douglas developed his unique style from modern European art, ancient Egyptian art, and West African art. His paintings are semi-abstract and feature flat forms, hard edges, and geometric shapes. Douglas was born in Topeka, Kansas in 1899 and was encouraged by his mother to pursue his interest in art. He earned his B.A. degree from the University of Nebraska in 1922.

In 1925 Aaron moved to New York City and began illustrating for both The Crisis and Opportunity magazines. He developed a passion for African and Egyptian design but also studied modernistic styles of painting under German artist Winold Reiss. Folk art was a major theme in many of his works, and my individually hand painted cachet shows him working on such a subject.

In 1940 he moved to Nashville and founded the Art Department at Fisk University and taught there for 27 years. His paintings have been shown at museums, galleries, and universities worldwide and are known for modernism fused with ancestral African images.

This cover, along with the others in the "Modem Art in America" series was produced exclusively for my subscribers. Aaron Douglas — Collins #U5107 at $12.50.
