Charles Sheeler

This important artist was an American painter and commercial photographer. In fact, he was one of the most skilled and accomplished photographers of the 20th Century. Sheeler was born in Philadelphia in 1883 and studied art there in the early 1900s. In 1909 he traveled to Paris to continue his studies. When he returned to the states, he took up commercial photography concentrating on architectural subjects.

Charles owned a farmhouse in rural Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and spent much of his time there. His paintings were mostly structures as were his photos. My hand painted cachet shows the artist sitting in front of an early Pennsylvania-Dutch barn. Charles Sheeler is considered one of the founders of American modernism, and his First Day Cover is now ready. Collins #U5108.
