Joseph Stella

Stella was an Italian-born New York artist best known for his depictions of industrial America. Occasionally he would stay from this topic with other works such the floral presentation in my individually hand painted cachet or in his colorful and whimsical oil "Battle of Lights, Coney Island" done in 1913.

In 1911 he traveled to Paris where he befriended Gertrude Stein and met many "Futurist" artists in her salon and subsequently began to use many of their techniques in his paintings. Joseph returned to New York City in 1913 and enjoyed close professional relationships with Alfred Stieglitz and Marcel Duchamp. A remarkable illustrator, it was once said in a magazine article that "he prowled the streets, sketch pad and pencil in hand, to catch the story of a life. "
