Gerald Murphy

This gifted artist only painted for eight years (1921-1929) but remains well known for his still life works done in a precisionist, cubist style. During this time period Murphy, along with other American modernist painters in Europe such as Charles Demuth and Stuart Davis, did paintings that included pop culture images and mundane objects from commercial products and advertising design.

My hand painted cachet shows the artist and his wife Sara in front of an example of his work which featured gears from watches and clocks. The colors coordinate with those of the new stamp which is tied to the envelope with the first day of issue bullseye postmark from New York City.

Gerald and Sara moved to the French Riviera in the 1920s and created a social circle that included many artists and writers. From this group of acquaintances, they became lifelong friends with F. -Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemmingway, Pablo Picasso, Cole Porter and Dorothy Parker, among others.
