Arthur Dove

This interesting set produced just for my subscribers is winding toward completion with Arthur Dove being the next to last cover in the series. He was an American modernist and is often considered our first abstract painter. Dove used many types of media and unconventional combinations of colors and styles to create his art. During the 1920s, he made many works with pastels on paper. Such a work was "Nature Symbolized" from 1924, and it was his use of color and his "extraction abstraction" based on natural forms that I wanted to depict on this individually hand painted cover.

Arthur's artistic evolution was shaped by his friendship with Alfred Stieglitz whom he met in 1909. Alfred was Dove's senior by sixteen years, and his urban, European, and Jewish cultural roots contrasted to Arthur's rural, Anglo-Saxon, Protestnnt heritage. Dove was quiet and gentle while Stieglitz was outspoken and argumentative. Their friendship was built on the mutual idea that art forms should encompass modem spiritual values as opposed to materialism and tradition.
