1991 SOUTH DAKOTA

A postal clerk with high very good intentions searched high and low for the best cancel device to ensure clear postmarks. He found a good, little used one and changed the date to correct December 13th but forgot to change the year to 1991. He canceled 133 corers and then discovered his mistake, changed the year to 1991 and then canceled the remaining 177 covers. As a result, all of the 1991 South Dakota MILFORDS are key collectibles as both varieties -- correct and error -- are distinct and limited items. Adding to their appeal are very low serial numbers used -- 201 to 510. 

With Mount Rushmore towering in the background, a pair of canvasbacks takes flight in the hand-fainted cachet. An unusual MTLFORD which was appropriately serviced on Friday the 13th.
