Black Heritage

August Wilson - Playwright

Cover Announcement

August was an American playwright and has often been referred to as the "Theater's Poet of Black America." In 2006 Wilson was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame. He is best known for a series of ten plays collectively known as "The Pittsburgh Cycle." They chronicle the

experiences and heritage of the African-American community in the 20th Century.

My individually hand painted cachet pays tribute to one of those plays - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom which was written in 1984. In 2020 it was adapted into a movie under the watchful eyes of Denzel Washington. 2016's Fences has already become a movie, and Washington, speaking about the other eight, confirms that they will also become movies. "The greatest part of what's left of my career is making sure that "August is taken care of."

The colors of this cachet are vibrant, and I really like the way it turned out. From a philatelic first day cover point of view, it indeed makes sure, in Denzel Washington's words, that "August is taken care of." August Wilson - Collins #I6001 at $16.50.
