WINTER OLYMPICS
For this issue I wanted to depict several views of the dramatic and exciting Winter Olympic sport of Ski-Jumping. In this instance, it's as though you are standing at the end of the ramp and are viewing three perspectives in a snapshot of time. The vertical format of the cover allows me to capture the intrigue of the moment.
First there is the landing area far below surrounded by a multitude of multi-colored spectators. The hand painting of "the crowd" in itself is something on which you will want to reflect. At the perimeter of the viewing area are various flags waving in the breeze with the Olympic flag in center prominence. Also, of course, is the Olympic torch with flame brightly burning. Beyond the Olympic stadium are buildings and streets of the host city. All of this detail is viewed as the Olympian would see it as Lie
begins his jump.
The second visual sensation is the panoramic view of high mountain peaks rising in the not too far distance. The grayish violet rock of the sheer upper cliffs. Ridges of emerald evergreens rising from the valley floor until terminated by the hostile climate at the timberline. The whole range of majestic peaks is topped by scenic layers of glistening snow. An alpine showcase.
Then there is the Olympian himself. He has flashed down the ramp and propelled himself up and out over the hill. Distance and form are now his twin objectives. He is the focal point of the thousands gathered below. His jump uniform is a regal red and it contrasts wonderfully with the mountain backdrop. He is bending over his skis intent on achieving the very best that the jump can offer. As an unusual format, I have placed the stamp and "First Day of Issue" slogam cancellation at the center of the cover so, in fact, it appears that the jumper is actually soaring over them. You will need to see to appreciate.
This is a different Olympic cover in terms of composition from any you've ever seen, and I recommend it and the others forthcoming for this issue as COLLINS looks in depth at the high flying sport of Ski-Jumping. Item #I1301 - $7.00.
