RAILROAD MAIL CAR - 1920'S 

This issue in the Transportation Series shows an exterior view of an early mail car. I decided to illustrate the interior of the car and am very pleased with the results. Two mail clerks are busy sorting the mail as the train speeds through the night. Gas lamps are suspended from the ceiling and provide enough light for the pair to process the many sacks awaiting their attention. One sorts letters into various bins. His companion is putting packages on a shelf for individual treatment. I am very happy with the final appearance of this hand-painted cachet -- very realistic and effective.

A pair of the 21-cent stamps is canceled with the Santa Fe, New Mexico First Day cancel. Underneath them is a second mini-cachet showing a U.S. mail pouch. This is a very smooth looking COLLINS for the Transportation Series. Trains are a popular topic and this railroad FDC with a mail theme certainly is a nice item for any cover collection.
