SOUTH CAROLINA STATEHOOD

The South Carolina cover carries on the COLLINS series of Bicentennial Statehoods -- and this is another very attractive one to add to the set.

Blackbeard, the pirate, sailed the Carolina coast, and this colorful buccaneer holds a prominent spot in my hand-painted cachet. Also shown riding through a southern marsh is patriot Francis Marion, known as the "Swamp Fox" as he fought for the Colonies' independence. Economic influences are represented by colorful bolts of cloth for the textile industry, and tobacco plants recognize that crop's importance in the State's history. Azaleas and camellias display their colorful blooms and palmetto trees (also shown on the stamps) stand tall. Fort Sumpter portrays part of the military heritage, and a wild Tom turkey portrays an example of the state's varied wildlife population. All in all, an interesting and eye-appealing South Carolina cachet.

The lettering and border on this cover are painted in a handsome shade of purple which blends nicely with the cachet. The purple also contrasts nicely with the colors of the previously offered Statehood covers and, again, I remind you not to miss acquiring each CONI L in Lhis "Thirteen Original States" set.

One stamp is officially canceled with a Columbia, South Carolina postmark. A second stamp is canceled at the B. Free Franklin historic Post Office in Philadelphia with the Colonial style postmark. Another fine Bicentennial of Statehood First Day Cover. Item #X1301 - $7.75
